“It has a riveting plot and colorful, fully drawn characters.”

– Dr. Richard L. Verrier, F.A.C.C.,  Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

5 Stars

Thoroughly enjoyable! I was captivated from beginning to end. Deadly Rhythm had a riveting combination of character and action which made it fun to read. Dr Kowey is a skillful and talented storyteller with the ability to draw his readers in from the start.  I loved his first novel, Lethal Rhythm, but this was even better. I look forward to the continuing adventures of Philip and Dorothy. Can’t wait for the next one!

“Great Read”

Philip Sarkis, the slightly unhinged (but brilliant) cardiologist at the center of Peter Kowey’s ‘Deadly Rhythm’, finds himself wondering if an elderly WWII veteran’s death is due to natural causes, a medication error, or murder. In this page-turning medical thriller, Sarkis must confront the complexity of our healthcare system, scheming malpractice lawyers, and demons from his own past.

This is a great read–I couldn’t put it down. It is refreshing to read a novel that so skillfully integrates the issues of medical science with such heart pounding suspense. Highly recommended!

(Translated from Spanish) While the novel is dedicated to the mass public, we, those who share the author’s specialty, find multiple winks, references, and anchor points.

Blogger Review – Hey Lorri (Spoiler Alert!)  –  I had not read his previous book, but found this one to be interesting. I thought I had the story all figured out, but was I wrong! Philip gets involved in the case and can’t let go, knowing that it could cause him problems. It kept me reading through the night to find out what would happen!

– Hey-Lorri.com

The book is entertaining for all comers but also instructional for the dysfunctional practice of medicine in the USA. I congratulate you on finding the time and energy to providing entertainment and education to all who have the opportunity to read your book.

– Roger D. Duber, D.O. FACC

Philip Sarkis, a cardiologist is a very good doctor with an all business attitude. He maybe a bit rough around the edges but he cares about helping each of his patients. When a young wife and mother dies expectantly his whole world changes.

Soon he finds himself the subject of a law suit, he gets lost in alcohol, his wife and children leave him and he sinks into a deep depression. But something about this patient doesn’t seem right. Her husband marries shortly after her death to a smart, cunning, sly woman. DR Sarkis is determined to find out exactly how she died and clear his name.

This book affected me deeply. I could see this happen in real life, and to watch a mans life crumble due to a malpractice suit was thought provoking. In my opinion it must make it hard for doctors to do their job the the cloud of a possible law suit hanging over their heads.

-Sheri A. Wilkinson (Princeton, IL) from Amazon.com

Kowey’s story is a good one and his prose is meaty and engaging. Well worth cracking a bottle of wine and settling in with this excellent story of a rise and fall of a Main Line doctor. Can’t wait for the next one!

– Peter Taft, Princeton

Thoroughly engaging blend of medical tech, mystery, local Philly flavor and just plain fun. Dr. Kowey found a way to skewer the legal, medical and tech industries in one fell swoop. I enjoyed it immensely and look forward to reading the next novel.

– Amazon Reviewer, 5 Stars

“Your novel’s a good read. The ending shocked me. I wanted resolution! I suspect you’re laying the groundwork for another one, right?…Being a Philly boy, I liked the Philly references a lot. I felt for Philip. I liked his relationships with the other characters, particularly Dorothy…Good luck on your second book. Your first will go on my shelf of signed books, about 100 there.”

– Pete Taft, CEO and Managing Partner, Taft and Partners/PharmApprove

Fun to read and quite successful in stoking the fires of indignation for those who love to hate —- not just aimed at the villans, and they are bad, but the backdrop itself, an overactive, flawed, unjust and even crooked legal system and its implications.

Ironically, the only justice finally achieved, and/or perhaps achievable, is through highly illegal means (i.e. murder).

Implicitly, the book raises the question, “Why would anyone want to practice medicine in or around Philadelphia if they could do anything else?”….Write a good book, for example.

– Paul G. Finegan

Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how much I enjoyed your book. I see numerous consults weekly for the university and a private group of orthopedists. Thus, i’ve been the defendant in two suits with post-op complications. So, I could relate to that incredible angst one feels in a deposition and at trial. The book was a real “page-turner”!

– Ray Browne

Extremely well done. Congratulations! I look forward to the movie.

The 800-Pound Gorilla in the Healthcare Living Room

An article in The American Journal of Medicine

“I have read your novel! I borrowed a kindle and read the electronic version in the end. Thank goodness for modern technology! Congratulations on writing such an enjoyable story. Where did you find the time to write it?!? I applaud you. The characters were nicely rounded, especially Philip, the relentless perfectionist and his scheming quest for the truth.”

– Zoe Hamill, PhD, Manager Safety, Pharmacovigilance and Regulatory, ViiV Healthcare Ltd

“I downloaded Lethal Rhythm on my Kindle. It took me 3 pages to get into the story and a few hours (VERY late at night), to finish the whole book. I think it reads a lot like Crichton, which is ironical. If I remember correctly, you told me that you actually met Crichton in Boston in one of the hospital where you were moonlighting when he was working on his first book. Anyway, I see the story adapting to the big screen quite well.”

-Dr. Simone Musco, American College of Cardiology,  Montana Chapter and a practicing Electrophysiologist.

“Even made me laugh out loud at times; your descriptions of Philly, restaurants, academic and private practice medicine, the FDA, the legal mess – a lot there. I am not much of a mystery reader but still not sure who did what so I cant wait to finish it.”

– Arnold Meshkov, Cardiologist and Professor at Temple University

“It was fantastic!!! Congratulations. I actually love medical mysteries and yours really was a thriller. Fast read, exciting, and not as predictable as some books I’ve read. Really does keep your interest. It also gets your message across nicely.”

Susan D. Housholder, RN, MSN, ANP-BC, FAHA, AACC, Nurse Practitioner, UM-Multidisciplinary Aortic Program, Cardiovascular Center

“Just finished the book. It was so awesome!!! I really enjoyed it. You are a great writer. I could see this as a movie one day.”

Rob Esgro, Chief Development Officer, Vindico

“Just finished reading your novel, “Lethal Rhythm” and enjoyed it very much. Could hardly put it down. I just finished a deposition one week ago, thankfully not directed towards myself, which reminded me of the terrible state of affairs we are in with everybody suing everybody else. I hope you accomplish your goal of enlightening the public on how devastating a law suit can be on a “good” doctor. Keep up the good work.”

Ronald H. Miller, MD, FHRS, San Diego Cardiac Center, Sharp Memorial Hospital

“It was absolutely great. I really enjoyed recognizing components of the characters, the locales, and the EP doc scenarios. The writing was excellent, as evidenced by my absolutely, viscerally hating the Hugh character after only ~25 pages. In the main character you captured someone with a long history of doing right, an everyman in some sense of it, while being unjustly being taken down by life as we unfortunately know it at times. I had moments of being struck at the first mention of grapefruit juice having been ‘recommended’ and when the problematic drug is revealed to be a pro-drug; nicely done.”

– David, a cardiologist working in the pharmaceutical industry

Also, I specifically liked the way that you wrote the main character to be a strong person but not a perfect hero, and the way that the ending was not simply an all-is-right-with-the-world moment.”

“Enjoyed Lethal Rhythm. Great incorporation of all things Philly”

– Robert Mowery, MD, Primary Care, Ambler, PA.

“Rivetting; impossible to put down- perhaps the fastest 300-page read I’ve done in years. This is a must for anyone in healthcare and required reading for US cardiologists. For anyone that’s lived in the Delaware valley the old haunts are a treat. Loved it!”

Mori J. Krantz, MD FACP FACC

Renowned Cardiologist and a member of the prestigious FDA Cardiorenal Advisory Committee

“I could not put down your book until I finished it. I found it intriguing partially because of my fascination with cardiology and history of electrophysiology but also because the topic hit home… Your book armed me with good arguments on how the system can be manipulated by plaintiff’s attorneys. I also liked the ending of the book – quite unexpected.”

Marina Brockway, Viva Quaint Scientist

“I admire the dedication it took to actually sit down and write a plot driven manuscript. I think that your protagonist could serve as the nidus for a new career–investigative physician. It reads somewhat like an early Dick Francis and I suspect is somewhat autobiographical.”

Dr. Lou-Anne Beauregard, Cardiologist

“I loved it! I literally couldn’t put it down. However, now that I’m done, I’m hoping for a sequel.”

– Shauna Mace, Director of New Client Relations, TGS Financial Advisors

“It was great. It was fun to read about a local setting. I did not see the ending coming. Very clever. Congratulations! It was very very good.”

– Rainey Rylko, Client Associate, TGS Financial Advisors

“I could not put the book down… Loved the concept of what I call clinically appropriate retribution… The characters were rich, intriguing, and easy to identify.”

– Andrew Isaacs, Chief Strategy Officer, Phoenix Marketing Solutions

“For anyone interest in medicine, murder, drugs, tangled relationships, integrity(or lack of it) doctor doing his utmost best, but being deceived by patient, and for better of worse-Main Line Philly- a must.”

– David E. Behrend, M.ED, Director, Career Planning Services For Lawyers

“Excellent novel! Riveting story with wonderful plot line and character development. Most importantly, a cogent, balanced, and accurate view of the”other side “ of medical malpractice cases, the havoc and emotional toll visited upon caregivers unjustly accused. Can’t wait for your sequel.”

– Frank McGeehin, Chief of Clinical Cardiology for Main Line Health, Interventional Cardiologist for Lankenau

“I found the book a sobering and realistic assessment of today’s malpractice environment in the United States written in an engrossing manner for the public. The principle characters were richly depicted. The reader will become educated into the world of electrophysiology and pharmacology of the prolonged QT syndrome while unable to put the book down due to the intrigue that Kowey has wrapped this educational package around.”

–  Ralph G. Brindis, MD, MPH, FACC, FSCAI, President of the American College of Cardiology

“The story itself is very absorbing and believable, the characters are interesting and well defined, the plot moves quickly and the dialogue is very readable.  It has movie plot written all over it. The ending is perfect and is old West justice. I am anxious to know just how much is truth and how much fiction — but as a reader it doesn’t make any difference.  John Grisham had better watch out.”

-Dr. David Cannom, MD, Chief of Cardiology of Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles, CA.

” It was a great read!…  I thought the ending set you up perfectly for a sequel.”

– Jeffery Anderson, MD, Associate Chief of Cardiology, Intermountain Medical Center, Murray, UT

“My colleague,Dr. Peter Kowey, has clearly described this unhealthy medical environment in his excellent, recently published book, Lethal Rhythm which describes events surrounding and following a scandalous medical malpractice lawsuit.”

-Joseph S. Alpert, MD, Professor of Medicine, University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, AZ. Editor-in-Chief, American Journal of Medicine

“Mr.” Kowey you have your fingers in too many pies. Do you remember Sr. Rose’s comment many (too many) years ago. Best wishes and love. Lois

Thank you very much for this excellent book that succesfully displays the current severe state of affairs in medical malpractice cases. The situation is similar in my country, Turkey, where there are many dishonest and horribly ignorant lawyers, aided by the Justice system itself, who ruthlessly try to rob doctors for laughable reasons.

I am also an avid reader of Dr. Kowey’s medical texts, and I expect a proper sequel to this book.

Congratulations on writing such a page-turning story. I enjoyed the combination of medical clues and technical details that created an ending which I never saw coming.

Your deep character development gave your heroes and villains very tangible emotions and motives but not at the expense of slowing down the story.

Great work and I am looking forward to the sequel.

I thought both books were exceptional.
Lethal Rhythm opened my eyes to the severity of the malpractice situation in this country, and the enormous threat this is imposing on our most revered and dedicated physicians.

Deadly Rhythm was also a beautifully crafted story, and the ending was a real shocker.

I found the main characters, Philip and Dorothy, to be smart, compelling and very engaging. I enjoyed every minute I spent with them.

I am looking forward to the next novel.
    Bravo, Dr Kowey!
